THE WHO: Justin Alan Pierce
This blog post has sat in my Tumblr “Drafts” section for over a year. Being that April 10th was Sibling Appreciation Day, I hope sharing this personal part of my life not only represents a small portion of the gratitude I have for my twin brother, but serves as a lesson to those who have siblings.
My older twin brother, Justin Alan Pierce, was born with cerebral palsy. Justin was a bright eyed kid who LOVED to sing Christmas carols in the summer, birthday songs at the wee hours of the morning and laugh endlessly, which he knew was an infectious gift.
Though we may not have shared the same experiences that other siblings had, the memories I have of us as kids singing to the top of lungs on Saturday mornings, labeling photos with “Gumby” and “Gumbo” when we lost our front teeth and sporting the various matching outfits my mother forced us to wear as kids, will forever stand out as some of my favorite childhood pastimes.
On the morning of Wednesday, March 2, 2011, he passed away suddenly. Nothing could have prepared me for that day, but through this tragedy I have learned that his 28 years of life and larger-than-life personality were more than just a blessing but a guide for life lessons we often overlook, which include:
Lesson #1 - Don’t complain about situations you can’t change. Deal with them and find a reason to enjoy and love life.
Lesson #2 - Put a smile on someone’s face—it’s a harmless gesture that can effortlessly be passed on to others.
Lesson #3 - Make the simple things in life the highlight of your day. His enjoyment was simple: food, music, and the women that provided him with either of those two offerings.
Justin Alan Pierce aka JP, I will forever love you and am beyond thankful to have had you in my life. You have in many ways made me a stronger person and a caring friend. Though you couldn’t walk in this life, I am sure you’re flying in your next one. I can only hope that when we do see each other again, I’ve put in enough work to put a smile on your face.
“Live life to the fullest, no matter what your situation or current condition may be…” is the message I share with the world today - BP
